Mill Creek was laid out as a planned city: curving streets, townhome slopes, golf-course edges, and lawns that were meant to look trimmed from the day the house sold. The soils are the soils of a graded subdivision, and the rain is the same county rain that finds every low corner. In a kept neighborhood, gravel without a steel or paver edge looks like a construction pile. The edge is what makes it a surface.

A clean gravel court, edged like it belongs
We cut a straight line, set the edge, and fill to it. The rock is the size you can walk in shoes. Drainage still matters: a gravel patio that is a low spot becomes a birdbath of fines. We crown it or we drain the low corner.
This is also the right fix for the ugly side strip between a townhome and the fence, the one that never grew grass. Dig it out and gravel it, or keep mulching mud.
The ground in Mill Creek
The expectation here is a clean edge. Lawns get mowed on a schedule, aerated before they mat down, and fertilized lightly enough that we are not just feeding the moss. Townhome and hillside lots need low walls and tight paver work more than they need a big landscape renovation. Bark beds are there to keep the mulch line straight and the weeds out of the front that faces the street.
We still find the same drainage mistakes as everywhere else: downspouts tied to nothing, and patios pitched back at the siding. The difference is that a small failure shows, because the rest of the street is kept. Native shrubs fit the greenbelts behind the houses. A tropical plant list does not survive the first wet winter, and it will not match the neighborhood even if it did.
How we do the work
Gravel stays put when it has a compacted base, a fabric or a separation from the clay, a slight crown or a cross slope, and an edge. A load of rock dumped on the grass is a mud pit by spring. We dig out the soft soil, build the base, and top it with the rock you actually walk and drive on.
The top rock is not the same as the base rock. Base is angular and locks. The surface might be smaller crushed rock or a cleaner gravel, depending on whether this is a drive, a dog run, or a path.

- Cars, foot traffic, or both
- How soft the ground is in March
- Where the water crosses the drive today
- An edge against lawn or beds so the rock does not migrate
Base rock and top rock
The base is larger, angular, and compacted in lifts until it stops moving under the machine. The top is smaller and thick enough to cover, not thick enough to rut into piles. One material dumped once is not a drive section.
Edges and weeds
Steel, timber, or a paved border on a walking path. On a farm drive, the ditch is the edge. Weeds in gravel get pulled or treated early, before the root is a shrub. A thick, clean surface grows fewer of them than a dirty thin one.
Fabric
Separation fabric keeps clay from pumping up. It is not weed magic, and it is not a substitute for digging out the mud. We lap it and we cover it. Sun-baked fabric at the edge means the gravel was spread too thin.
