Marysville spreads across flat ground north of Everett, out toward Tulalip. The lots are bigger than the city lots to the south, and the ground is slow to drain. Water does not run off a slope because there often is not a slope. A valley lot design that starts with plants starts wrong. Design the water first
We draw the drains and the pitch, then the floor you walk on, then the plants that can take wet feet where it will still be wet. Raised beds are a design tool here, not a decoration. A lawn in the low corner is a choice to own moss, and we will mark it that way.
The plan should still look like the valley: open, a little rural where the lot is rural, not a walled courtyard copied from a drier city.
The ground in Marysville
Flat ground sounds easy until a winter storm sits on it. French drains and permeable surfaces matter here more than tall walls. Yards are family yards: room for a lawn, a play set, fruit trees that people already have and want kept, and a patio that can take a barbecue without turning into a pond.
