Granite Falls takes the mountain rain and sits on ground that falls away toward the river and the falls. Steep sides of lots are normal. Water concentrates, finds the weak spot in a bank, and leaves a rill where the lawn used to be. Cool, wet weather keeps moss growing for most of the year. A short lawn season and a thick mat
We dethatch the bench, not the bank. On a slope the debris slides and the blades cut rills. The moss comes off in heavy mats because it has had all winter. Under it the soil may be thin. We do not keep raking until there is nothing left.
Seed has a short window before the fall rains or the late spring cold. If we miss it, we wait. A bare patch through winter on a rainy slope is an erosion problem. We cover it or we time the work so grass has a chance.
The ground in Granite Falls
Properties on the edge of town back into fir and alder. The lawn, if there is one, is a cleared bench. The rest is slope, stump, and shade. We get called when a bank has started to slump after a wet winter, or when a path down to the lower yard has turned into a creek.

How we do the work
Thatch here is usually moss plus a layer of dead stems, not the classic Midwest straw mat. A power rake set too deep tears out the live grass and leaves a scar. We set the blades to lift the mat and stop when we are in soil.
The debris has to leave the property. A thatch layer raked into the bed or left in windrows just moves the problem. We haul it. If the lawn underneath is mostly dirt and shade, dethatching is the start of a different plan, not a greener lawn by itself.

Cutting to the dirt is how the mat comes back. We leave the grass taller than a golf collar, especially in shade. Tall enough to shade its own soil, short enough to walk.
How deep we go
Shallow enough to save the crowns of the grass. If the lawn is thin, a second light pass beats one aggressive pass that pulls the plants out by the roots. You should see soil in places and live grass still standing.
Hauling is part of the job
A dethatched lawn produces a surprising pile, wet and heavy. We load and remove it. Spreading it in the beds plants the moss and the weed seed you just paid to lift.
