Granite Falls takes the mountain rain and sits on ground that falls away toward the river and the falls. Steep sides of lots are normal. Water concentrates, finds the weak spot in a bank, and leaves a rill where the lawn used to be. Cold soils do not take up food. Feeding early just to get on a route wastes the product and can push soft growth into a cold snap.

A short season, a light hand
We feed the flat lawn once it is actually growing, and again in early fall if it is a real lawn and not a moss shelf. Thin rocky soil gets less product, not more. There is nowhere for the extra to go except downhill in the rain.
We skip the bank. Fertilizer on a slope over rock is runoff.
The ground in Granite Falls
Properties on the edge of town back into fir and alder. The lawn, if there is one, is a cleared bench. The rest is slope, stump, and shade. We get called when a bank has started to slump after a wet winter, or when a path down to the lower yard has turned into a creek.
Rock walls and a drain at the top of the slope do more than plants will. Beauty bark in the deep shade keeps the weeds down and the mud off the house, but it will not hold a bank by itself. Tree work is practical: limbs over the roof, and sightlines where the forest is closing the drive. Aerator and seed belong on the flat piece only. Treating the whole hillside like a turf job is how you waste a season.
How we do the work
Most “hungry” lawns we see are wet, shady, or mowed to the dirt. Fertilizer on that lawn feeds the moss and burns the grass if the rate is hot. We fertilize after we know the lawn has light, drainage, and a thatch layer thin enough for the product to reach soil.
We use slow feed, not a cheap quick green that is gone in three weeks and yellow after. Lime when the soil is sour. We do not stack lime and a heavy nitrogen app on the same afternoon and hope.
If the lawn is mostly moss, we say so and we sell the dethatch instead of a bag. Food is the last step, not the first.

Pets and kids
Keep them off until the product is watered in and the blades are dry. We use common lawn fertilizers, not a mystery mix, and we still do not treat them as something to play in while they are sitting on the leaf.
Moss products
Iron blacks the moss. It does not remove the shade or the water that grew it. We use it as a tool after the mat is managed, not as the whole plan. Dead moss still has to be raked out or you are looking at a black carpet.
Lime, separately
Western Washington soil is often acidic, and moss likes it that way. Lime changes the pH slowly. It is not a moss killer and it is not a fertilizer. We apply it when the lawn needs it, and we do not bury it under a heavy nitrogen app the same hour.
