Mercer Island sits in the middle of Lake Washington, so almost every street runs downhill to the water. Lots are steep, the tree canopy is old and tall, and the shoreline lots have banks that move when runoff from the street above has nowhere else to go. Limbs get lifted for the water view. The shrubs holding the bank stay. Cutting those for a better photo is how the bank moves.

Open the view without skinning the bank
We prune from the house outward: window height, roofline, the one branch that drops in the lawn. Shoreline dogwood and willow get thinned, not cleared. A bald bank is an erosion job we then have to sell you.
Debris does not get dumped over the edge. We haul it. Brush tossed down the slope is not a wildlife pile. It is a mess at the water.
The ground in Mercer Island
Most of our work here is on slopes. A patio or terrace has to be cut into the hill with a real base and a drain behind any wall, or the first wet winter shows where the water wants to go. On the lakefront lots we keep native shrubs on the bank, because they hold the soil better than lawn, and we take runoff to a drain or a rain garden instead of letting it sheet over the edge.
The city is strict about removing large trees and about work near the shoreline. We check what needs a permit before we cut or dig, and we plan around the trees you have to keep. Under those firs and cedars the ground is shady and mossy, so we often turn worn-out lawn into planting beds and stone paths that stay clean year-round.
How we do the work
We thin, we raise, and we take out dead wood. We do not top a tree. Topping makes a bigger, weaker tree and a yearly invoice. If a tree is the wrong tree for the spot, the honest options are prune it correctly or remove it, and we will say which.
Shrubs get pruned at the right time for the plant. A spring-flowering shrub cut to balls in March is a shrub with no flowers. Hedges that are meant to be hedges get sheared. Everything else gets pruned back to a bud or a branch, not buzzed into a cube.
What we look at first
- Dead, crossing, and broken wood
- Clearance over the roof, the walk, and the drive
- Whether the tree is too close to the house to ever be right
- What the shrub is, so we do not cut off the flower buds
We do not top
Topping a fir or a maple makes sprouts that are weakly attached and a tree that is taller again in a few years, uglier the whole time. If you want it shorter than pruning can honestly make it, removal is the sentence. We will help you say it.
What we will not climb
A tree we cannot tie into safely, a tree into the power lines, a huge removal over a glass house. We would rather walk away than do a dangerous job from the wrong ladder. We will tell you who the job is for.
When we cut
Deadwood anytime. Spring bloomers after they flower. Fruit trees in the dormant season. Hedges when they are growing so they can heal the shear. A single “prune everything in March” visit is how flowering shrubs get ruined.
