Darrington sits up against the Cascades, with Whitehorse Mountain on the skyline and a harder rain than the towns down on the flats. Soils run rocky, lots break off into steep cuts, and water does not sheet across a lawn so much as it cuts a track and takes the soil with it. The patio and the wall that creates it are one project. Level a place to sit on a lot that is not level
We cut a bench or we build one, drain the hill above it, and then pave the flat. Water from the slope is intercepted so the patio is not the creek. Furniture is not asked to sit on a surface that falls an inch a foot just because the lot does.
Rock and gravel around the patio fit these lots better than a bark bed that slides. We plan that edge while the machine is there.
The ground in Darrington
This is a small town with mountain weather. A wall that would be decorative in Mill Creek is structural here: it is holding a bank that wants to move every winter. We see shallow, rocky ground, overhanging fir and hemlock, and driveways that wash out where the grade dumps onto the road.
Planting lists shrink to what can handle cold, wet, and poor soil. Huckleberry and mountain hemlock already grow on the edges of these properties. A lawn is possible on the flatter bench of a lot, but it needs seed and soil that can take a short season, not a turf schedule copied from Everett. Cleanup is often about limbs over the roof and ditches that have filled with gravel from the bank above.
How we do the work
A patio here is a roof at ground level. It has to shed water, it has to sit on rock instead of clay, and it has to meet the door without holding a puddle at the threshold. We build in pavers most of the time because a paver field can be lifted and reset. A cracked slab is a demolition.

Fire pits
Set in a place the smoke can leave and the embers are not in the bark. The pit sits on the same honest base as the patio, not on four pavers in the dirt. Clearance to the house and to branches is part of the layout, not a surprise after the first fire.
Furniture first
We size the floor to the table you own, the grill lid that has to open, and the walk around them. A large empty patio with the table in a puddle is a bad large patio. Bring the measurements.
What it costs more to ignore
Drainage and the base. They are the unphotogenic half of the invoice. Cutting them is how a patio gets rebuilt. We would rather build a smaller floor on a real base than a big one on clay.
