Sultan sits on the Sultan River, on the way up the highway toward the trails and the passes. Yards step with the terrain. Water comes off the higher ground, crosses a lawn, and heads for the river or the ditch. Cold soils do not take up food. Feeding early just to get on a route wastes the product and can push soft growth into a cold snap.

A short season, a light hand
We feed the flat lawn once it is actually growing, and again in early fall if it is a real lawn and not a moss shelf. Thin rocky soil gets less product, not more. There is nowhere for the extra to go except downhill in the rain.
We skip the bank. Fertilizer on a slope over rock is runoff.
The ground in Sultan
The useful projects are the ones that make a sloped lot walkable: a gravel path that stays put, a rock wall where the bank is cutting, a drain at the top of the slope so the patio is not the creek. Forest edge is close. Alders and maples lean in, and after a wind the cleanup is limbs, not a few leaves on a patio.
Lawns exist on the benches. They need seed that can take shade at the tree line and a soil that is often thin. We do not promise a golf-course surface against the timber. Native mountain plants hold the cuts better than a bark bed that just slides downhill in January. Access for machines is usually fine along the highway side and tight once you are in the trees. We look at that before we promise a wall.
How we do the work
Most “hungry” lawns we see are wet, shady, or mowed to the dirt. Fertilizer on that lawn feeds the moss and burns the grass if the rate is hot. We fertilize after we know the lawn has light, drainage, and a thatch layer thin enough for the product to reach soil.
We use slow feed, not a cheap quick green that is gone in three weeks and yellow after. Lime when the soil is sour. We do not stack lime and a heavy nitrogen app on the same afternoon and hope.
If the lawn is mostly moss, we say so and we sell the dethatch instead of a bag. Food is the last step, not the first.

Lime, separately
Western Washington soil is often acidic, and moss likes it that way. Lime changes the pH slowly. It is not a moss killer and it is not a fertilizer. We apply it when the lawn needs it, and we do not bury it under a heavy nitrogen app the same hour.
What “green in a week” usually means
A fast soluble feed. It looks great, it fades, and it burns if the lawn was dry. We would rather you see a steady color over a month. If someone promised neon by Friday, ask what happens on the Friday after that.
Pets and kids
Keep them off until the product is watered in and the blades are dry. We use common lawn fertilizers, not a mystery mix, and we still do not treat them as something to play in while they are sitting on the leaf.
